There's no Democratic knee-cutting going on here. Romney is the victim of this attack, and other Republicans are the perpetrators.
These politicians, regardless of party, are all just suits and careerists: lawyers and businessmen. They don't care about free market principles any more than they do about helping the poor and the needy.
