I deleted the test that I played with and left the post with the descriptor as the URL.

Lemme try again, then I'll try TestUser.

Without a descriptor:

with:

as linked, no alt. Link takes you to original page. Do this by starting a hyper-link, put the web page url in the popdown, then add image tag (img), put in URL to image, add alt text (or not), then close the link using the "/link" tab. Your milage may differ, but it works here (IE8):
