Know what you mean. A few years ago the mountains looked like they were dusted with powdered sugar. I've only known two times in my life up there where I felt a powerful tornado ("powerful" being strong enough to fling trash high enough you start worrying about the planes it might hit).
Funny, though - I always thought that all the storms that hit us were the "cold" ones.
