The answer to your question...

...may be that CO2 levels may not necessarily be hostile to marine life, but rapid changes may be. Also, extinctions may be caused by a variety of other events; impacts, vulcanism, tectonic activity, climate change from other causes,and so on. Its pretty clear there's not much we can do about these events, but they are probably only apparent over deep geological time (except for the impacts!).
