Social conservatives who were sketchy on Romney will now be fired up for him. NC is a swing state that just voted by a huge margin to ban gay marriage, as have 29 other states.
On the other hand it will likely get more young people voting. Obama already had the liberal gay vote but will now shore up the independent gay vote and maybe even draw gop gays on the margins. It also draws a much clearer distinction between himself and Mitt.
Overall though, it's risky politics. Something you will never see from Romney. So why is Obama doing it now?
Because it is the right thing to do. What a concept huh!? A leader actually following his conscience and doing what is right despite unknowable political consequences.
