Here's a radical idea:
When somebody pops up with something I haven't heard of before, which often happens, I try to make it a point to find out what they're talking about offline before I spout off on it.
I do research. I check original material. I cut past the congenital idiots in the media. I look stuff up.
Try it. It's actually kind of fun.
