If the guy who built your planet and launched your species says "don't eat meat on Friday," it might be a good idea to go along with it.
Of course, God never "said" this, and to the best of my knowledge there's nothing in the Bible about it.
It was a man-made tradition to remember Good Friday, and no longer a hard-line rule of the Catholic Church.
