In the early stages of a crisis, you don't give detailed statements while information is scarce, events are rapidly unfolding, and you're scrambling to put together a response. Too much talk and you can paint yourself into a corner.
That's what Romney did and look what it got him.
As for the ubiquitous, "Evil lefty media is out to get us" canard*, why should that concern you? The Right has bought its own media. Until recently, Romney had most of his interviews at friendly venues like FOX.
*Besides "hoax", "canard" can also refer to a small forward stabilizer fin on an aircraft, or the French word for "duck".
