The term has a long and noble etymology in the building trades. When we used to work construction during summer breaks, we often had jobs that would take us out of town for extended lengths of time. We spent a lot of time in small-town Holiday Inns, getting to know the locals who patronized their cocktail lounges (often the only entertainment in town). Invariably, our new friends lived in trailers.
