And you are completely correct, the Mariners data certainly cut the chances of finding anything down to next to nothing.
Finding life on Mars has always been one of the selling points of NASA. It seems to be something with appeal to the taxpayers. It certainly does me, though I don't believe there is anything now. May have been once.
