I know its not the kind of sentiment that will be very popular in a space-oriented blog...
And contrary to what our instincts might tell us, technology won't help all that much. When Europeans sailed to the New World, the only tech they needed was the ability to forge metal tools, weave fabrics, grow food, raise livestock, and work in wood, stuff even the local savages could do, after a fashion. It was a skill set that almost any small village, or ship's crew, could provide for itself.
The Pilgrims could come to America and survive. If we were dropped in a similar place with today's tech, where would we get spare tires for the tractor?
Technology allows us to live in very hostile environments, but only for short periods of time, and with constant resupply from a home base. It is the very antithesis of self-sufficiency.

- So what's wrong with constant resupply from a home base?
- The tensions facing this Earth and species won't allow those expenditures.
- You need a reason to go there.
- Good point.
