Scientific information yes, but big news; I doubt it.
Was it big news when the US and Russia exploded nuclear devices very high in the upper atmosphere and the radioactive fallout spread all over the planet?
I suspect that the radioactive elements are still floating around there, causing the upper air actually to glow.

Some of it is caused by natural processes, such as the sun’s energy and cosmic rays, but some may be from ionising radiation from nuclear disintegrations.
