Just like fundamentalists need Satan, Islamists need Israel, Nazis need Jews, and Stalinists need "Imperialists". These philosophies are fueled by ignorance, hate and fear. And if the enemy they require no longer exists as a genuine threat(as in the case of Communism), they have to make one up. So if you don't believe their paranoia, and especially when you point this out to them, they declare you the enemy they seek. For these cults, generating hatred and fear is not an error, it is deliberate and calculated policy.

If you study them carefully, they all have two basic and fundamental psychological properties in common. They all believe they possess some characteristic, either intrinsic or earned, that makes them superior to others. And they all believe that their enemy (who lacks that attribute) wants to take from them, through treachery and deceit, everything their advantage has allowed them to acquire.

Narcissism and Paranoia. It really is as simple as that.
