epic villain

The villain is (played by) Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's latest telling, set in modern times...Sherlock in the 21st century. It's another in the recent string of BBC hits, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first two seasons.

It's unclear who the trek villain is that he's playing. There was some speculation that it's an alternate-universe Khan, but maybe not. But what is clear to me is that Cumberbatch is going to create a creepy, psychologically-complex villain, based on his portrayal of a Sherlock Holmes who might've been just eccentric at the end of the 19th century, but in the 21st is considered a mental case. In the pilot, he got off this wonderful line, after one too many bobbies called him a "psychopath": "I am not a psychopath, I'm a high-functioning sociopath! Do your research!", in a perfectly self-referential sociopathic tone of disdain and hostility. I'm guessing any villain he plays will be a real head case.

If you're interested, the BBC's Sherlock is free under Amazon Prime, and probably also Hulu (though I haven't checked).
