When photography was about 20 years old, and before there was electricity, "Snowflake" Bentley put a second-hand microscope and a camera together in an unheated barn in Vermont to take photos of thousands of snow crystals. Those pioneers of scientific studies, like Bentley, who cobbled together devices to make new tools just fascinate me with their ingenuity and dedication.
The book of his images is still in print!
A perfectly wonderful biography of him for children, Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, has done a great deal to revive interest in his work.
