Ummm.... TB.....
The Althing HAS existed for about that time, but there have been many, many countries and transitions since then; and therefore, many, many, Althingi's. The modern Iceland's current constitution dates back to 1944. Also, it hasn't really been independent until 1814.
Also, my comment is more of a hope, really. I realise that they have the utmost say in things, but this course of actions DOES seem to imply their consent. Therefore, matters are out of their hand, and into the ones of the few remaining Icelanders and the world. (Come one, there's less people in the country than there is in St. Louis!)
