"Wakes" are called "wakes" and lasted three days because with lead poisoning, often occurring because of eating off of pewter plates and drinking from pewter vessels, can cause a person to slow down to the point of appearing dead. Three days, the length of the usual wake, was long enough to ensure they were really dead.
