I was wrong about the capillary action
But I sat down and worked out the kinetics of the other problem, and I believe I got it right.
A falling object's total energy is the sum of its kinetic and potential energy. As it falls, it loses potential but gains kinetic. If its not going as fast as it should be, that energy goes into the surroundings, usually as friction.
That's how parachutes work, too.
