What they did in school, or that winning season, or the military, or that backpack trip to Europe, was the high point of their lives. After that came marriage, work, children, responsibility, a lifetime of quiet desperation---and that if they were fortunate and spared by tragedy. And one day they wake up facing their mortality.

Be gentle with them.
