That's the name of the tree (several varieties), and it gets planted everywhere because it has spectacular fall foliage. Then it drops those damn spikeballs everywhere.

It looks like a giant burr, something that would only work on an animal that was hairy and very large. Maybe sweetgums and giant prehistoric mammals used to be a symbiotic team.
