What if you were to place the unbroken clay pot where the broken one used to sit. This accomplished, sit and watch it for any annomalous motion. Play close attention, though. With its buddy already pushing up -- whatever it was you were going to plant in it -- you might have to place the unbroken pot on a suicide watch.
