Jody,
I'm sorry I didn't take the post as seriously as you'd hoped. I'm a smart-ass with poor timing.
However, I don't think much of the quote. Sorry, I just don't find it all that profound, rather the opposite.
I'm saying this in full knowledge that this means something to you. Recognize that it means something to me too.
"I do not have truth imposed on me."
Really? Chances are that Weatherhead was baptized into the faith before he could eat solid food. His entire life was one of instruction in its "Truths". The very foundation of his world view was imposed upon him.
"I don't impose it on myself." Actually, he does. We all do. It's called perception, and it is like the filters on the cameras on our robot mars explorers, we see what we want (or need)to see. It's a buffet, but our plates are only so big.
"Truth is self authenticating..." What does that mean? Seriously, Jody, what does that mean to you? You posted this quote, wanting feed-back, so I'm asking you, what does that mean?
For that matter, what does "Truth" mean in this quote? You are more familiar with his writing than I, by far. Can you give me a definition for "Truth" as he uses it? Seems to me, and I could be wrong, but it seems to be a substitute for just saying "God".
Why do I think this? It is the next bit of the quote: "...and when it possesses me, nothing can shake it from its enthronement..." The word possesses suggests a religious experience. Also, employing the term "enthronement" is also a common Christian phrase, heard it too many times for me to bow to its use, and recognize why it is used.
The only part I agree with is "until some greater truth displaces it or gives it less prominence." That's science. It's not perfect, it stumbles along, gets abused like religion does; but, I believe, has been better at serving up truth than any religion ever has.
As far as TRUTH goes, a man's got to recognize his limitations, my brain's only so big, never going to know TRUTH, just have to go on taking care of myself and those I love best I can, leftover energy for people I don't know, try not to hurt people as I speak my own mind.
Sorry I hurt you.
I've shopped all the religions looking for Truth. What I've found is mostly marketing about how their product is the only product, all the rivals are full of shit, you'll wind up breathing burning sulfur, seriously, got a couple of bucks?
I've buttered my bread (not to mention breaking it) being a scientist and by teaching science (when I had to).
Of the two, science verses god(s), I find comfort, delight, and awe in science more than any god(s)I have ever explored.
TRUTH I don't worry about anymore, I'll never know it, so why worry? Open my eyes as wide as they'll go, listen to whispers more than shouts, take deep breaths of this fragrant planet, touch with attention, take it all in.
All I know.
If you ask me, we're on a rollercoaster ride. Are you one that throws your arms in the air, or one that grips the rail in terror?
Me?
Depends on the day.
I hope that was a serious enough response, in apology for the Belushi gif.
Nope! (A serious review you probably won't like.)
