MOIRE

A while back, during a Congressional butt chewing session over the James Webb Space Telescope, this technology was mentioned as a possible alternative. (The fact that it was a diffracting lens, and not a reflector went right over my head)

At the time, the article I read specifically cited the 32 foot (10 m) one half scale, Phase 3 technology demonstrator, as a less expensive, more powerful, near term replacement for JWST.

That was probably just political hot air, since the DARPA - MOIRE would have, at the time, just barely got past it's Preliminary Design Review .

Still, if it works, it is fantastic technology. Sure would be nice to see a few of these built as planet hunters.
