Watching the live footage described above, something occurred to me.
After an initial and understandable period of confusion and bewilderment, the media did a pretty good job of covering this event. Sure, there were mistakes and problems, and some downright blunders, but that is to be expected. Despite the magnitude and horror of these events, and the fact that no one could possibly have been prepared for them, the media (at least, NBC) did a terrific job of sorting out the mess as it was unfolding. The journalistic professionalism and technical competence of the broadcasters was showcased very favorably.
We complain a lot about the mainstream media, but in an event like this, they show what they are capable of doing when pressed. I live in a disaster prone zone (hurricanes) and I've always noticed that local TV does a great job of keeping us prepared before a storm, and informed afterwards.
We're lucky to have them.
