Americans aren't any nastier than anyone else in the world.

In fact, we are probably better than most.

The real reason people hate us is we're such hypocrites about it. We are always making out how we're so damned saintly and wonderful, and everyone else is out to get us. We're such victims...and everyone hates us because they envy our freedom. Yeah, we're always yakking about our freedom, as if we invented the concept, or are the only ones who have any.

Its probably because of our Anglo-Saxon Puritan Christian forebears. Those people were all religious fanatics, seditious troublemakers and self-righteous bastards. That's why they came here. They weren't welcome in England.

But if you listen to us, we work harder than anyone else, we are more hospitable than anyone else, we're more patriotic and more civic-minded and we're inherently more decent and kind and wonderful. We are devoted to our families and love our country and fear God and are peaceful and loving people. The implication being...that no one else is any of those things. And all those things we did to the slaves and the Indians and the immigrants that came here to do our dirty work for us and all those countries we've invaded in the last 200 years (so we could make them free, of course)...well, that was a long time ago and doesn't matter any more, does it?

But the point is, if you look at any country's history, they all have a similarly inflated opinion of themselves, and a similar shabby record, at least, all the ones that had the power to do anything about it. That is what humans do. Don't be so shocked that we're such hypocrites. You can't show me one race of people on this planet that isn't. We're all just apes, y'know.
