They need to be reassured that their own heroes and role models aren't stabbing them in the back, that they've been conned big time and its time now for a reckoning. Even worse, they are afraid that their problems may be just the tide of history turning, and that not only is there nothing they can do about it, but that there's nothing anyone can do about it.

They've smugly congratulated themselves for years on their own self-righteousness, civic virtue and other sterling qualities, and now they are starting to see that no one has been keeping score, and the team captain has run off with their sweetheart.

They're not just scared, they're angry, they're ignorant and they're desperate. And they need to hate. They need a scapegoat, they need an enemy, they need a Jew they can blame it all on.
