I'm reading a complete works of Robert Louis Stevenson, whose grandfather (Robert Stevenson) was a master engineer and lighthouse designer. Robert Stevenson created many innovations for lighthouse construction, including pioneering the Fresnel Lens.

There is a long piece in the R.L.S. book by his grandfather about his painstaking construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse in Scotland (the famous "Inchcape Rock") It can be found online here.
