Go back and review your Escher, especially his "impossible buildings". There's a lot on the net.

Whoever worked on that episode was a huge fan, perhaps even an Escher scholar. It was steeped with references, visual puns, homages. I don't remember them all, but I remember being struck that it was very rich.
