A similar solution.

Having taught map-and-compass techniques and having a lot of experience with GPSs, there is a nifty fallback when none of those work.

I've had batteries go dead and run off the maps on my GPS, and where I've done a lot of backpacking been afflicted with low-level clouds I've found myself without access to many of the common fixes. However, all is not lost, usually.

If one is on a trail, which is the norm, then all one needs is their altitude. Get that from your watch or GPS and find where that is on your trail. Usually that will get you very close. Not always, but usually.

It beats trying to triangulate in a thick forest.
