It's been a decade since I read Foundation and Empire, but wasn't Harry Seldon's premise behind psycho-history that no single individual could have enough influence to disrupt the trends of humanity? Not sure I completetly buy that premise in real life, but so far we've managed to self correct away from totalitarism. Its just taken a lot of dead bodies to do so. Better to correct early than late.
