He said what he said because he knew the idea of a database of muslims would appeal to his knuckle-dragging bigoted supporters.

If that wasnt what he wanted to convey he wouldnt have repeatedly said those things. When he caught hell for it he didn't say " No I don't support such a thing..." he just coyly lied and said it was suggested by a reporter, not by him... again avoiding like hell coming out and saying he doesn't support the fascist, unconstitutional database.

He is clearly courting the bigot vote, and you are left in the awkward position of having to bend over backwards to defend him....
