Maybe Brits have a right to feel this way.

The last time foreigners invaded Saxon Britain was in 1066.

But we can't take advantage of that same racist indignation they feel entitled to. This country was built on the backs of the indigenous aboriginal inhabitants, other Europeans who got here first, imported slaves, and cheap labor from China, Eastern and Southern Europe and from Central and South America. And they were invited.

Why is it so difficult for Conservatives to understand the obvious? If you want to limit immigration, regulate the issuance of work permits so that the numbers of foreigners who come here to work can be controlled. As long as its illegal for aliens to work here, but effectively legal to hire them, you're going to have a problem. It really doesn't take a mental giant to figure that out.

Remember, the illegals risk arrest and deportation and have to endure horrid working conditions and abuse. They have no choice, no recourse to workplace justice and rights and bargaining. Their bosses have plenty of choices.

Start fining and jailing American businessmen who hire illegals and the problem will just go away. But good luck on getting a Republican Congress to sign on to legislation that might send their prime constituency to jail, or cut into their profits. That's why we can't get an immigration bill passed, even one crafted by the bipartisan Gang of Eight. Bigotry, it seems, is built on a solid foundation of greed and hypocrisy.
