Believe me, I had to read it slowly too. Like I said, amazing what they expected the voters to follow back then. I wonder how long the whole speech took.
He's saying, basically, that the founders were against slavery, and did what they could to suppress it short of sabotaging the entire founding process. Nobody knows how things might have gone, but the alternative might have been two countries. Which is what we fought a Civil War to prevent.
