Been watching 3-D printing for years now, and it is pretty exciting stuff. Were I a young man, like VRB, I'd be seriously looking into learning more about this new tech. Future is wide open.
There have been open-source systems online, and recently some kits are available (I'd have to dig up the links). I'd love to have the time to play with this for creating mine models. I've got this old pen plotter, see, It's got all kinds of motors and wires and stuff inside it...
Another approach is material removal, using a router or dremel tool to carve material away from a block. I've a crowned tooth that was created that way and it is a perfect match to my old tooth.
And yes, if you can create a model, you can print it out. SketchUp has many plug-ins to facilitate the process.
