I'm closing in on firing up the new site. This afternoon into the weekend, I'll be working on the database, and this site will be subject to random disruption, from random minor side effects, to major catastrophe. But of course I have backups.

You should protect yourselves against losing your posts by copying the text to the clipboard just before you post (ctl-A, ctl-C on windows).

The first step is to bring up a new database for the new site, and copy this site's posts into it. Then I'll wire up the two databases (using triggers, for the geeks among us) to have posts you make here be copied automatically to the new site. This will mean that the switchover should be "seamless", as the hubristic are prone to say.

After that I can go away and work on bringing up the software side of the new site, and very soon I'll invite you over for a critique.

My goal is to move to the new site before the end of the month, to avoid another month's exorbitant charges for this obsolete server. Stay tuned...
