My wife tells me her politics shifted (actually, she became political, prior to that she had never given it too much thought) after the Kent State shootings. She had no idea what the demonstrating students were doing when they were gunned down by National Guardsmen. She did not know whether or not they were threatening innocent people, or even if it appeared to the soldiers that they were doing so. What got to her was the attitudes and comments of the people in her family. It was a grim parody of the CS&N song: "They had it coming. It should have been done long ago, its about time someone taught those punks a lesson."

That's the kind of person Trump is, and that's the kind of people who voted for him.
