Maybe they're just probes, testing our defenses, designed to look like innocuous commercial or marketing messages, but really meant to see how long it takes for us to notice and erase them, and how effectively we seal the breaches. They may not even be sent by anyone. Perhaps their is a bot somewhere sending these out randomly to see if they provoke any secondary explosions, or counterbattery fire. Its what the grunts call "harassing fire", not meant to really hitanything, but just to keep us off balance, or see if it provokes any response, or to distract us from some other, more purposeful and subtle attack.
Does the contents of the spam folder reveal any patterns, like similarities in subject matter, country of origin, etc?
Do they all look like they come from the same place, or seem to have similarity of purpose?
