My guess is the Russians, including Putin, were investing heavily in USA real estate (including Trump and/or Kushner properties) as a means of laundering their cash and stashing it outside Russia. Wasn't one of the other Russians at that meeting a banker? You know, this might have not even been illegal, since presumably it all involves legit transactions, but it is a perfect way to shakedown a naive businessman who doesn't know what he's involved in, or doesn't care.
