Far too many people, without any fluency in matters such as science and history--and the analytical skills those studies encourage--are unable to discern lies from truth and are utterly taken in by the likes of Alex Jones. And then they vote.
Making a college education both more affordable (perhaps even free) and more accessible may constitute a vital step in preserving the value of our democracy. An ignorant electorate can, as we have seen, make democracy toxic to the nation.
