LIGO and VIRGO detected and located the collision of 2 neutron stars, optical observatories were able to quickly follow up and verify:
1) Yes gravity waves travel at the speed of light
2) Existing theories of Nucleo-synthesis are largely correct (the gold in your ring was mostly formed from the collision of neutron stars... )
