Many graduate students lucky enough to get accepted to a graduate school get most or all of their tuition waived and get paid a pittance to teach... in return the university gets people to work around the clock to assist in research, and teachers for classes.
As a Grad student in the late 1990's I made - in the best years MAYBE $18,000 out of which I had to pay rent, living expenses and buy textbooks... I worked many 24 hour or longer shifts in the lab... taking a second job was NOT possible if I were to do my graduate research and attend classes...
The proposed tax plan will now tax these students for the amount of tuition waived by the schools- this will now make it impossible for many students to consider grad school...
How will reducing the number of trained PhDs Make America Great Again?
Republican tax plan would triple or quadruple taxes on graduate students
