I don't doubt its a joke.
But the perpetrators don't need to believe this nonsense, they just need to feel that enough do that they can profit from it.
Of course, you could probably say the same about most Trump supporters. They know he's crazy and they know he's absurd, but they have an agenda that is being furthered. That's all that matters to that crowd.
