I dated a woman in the early '80's who's extended family were alarmed that I was Irish Catholic.

Proud member of the Corca Laidhe Tribe of southwest Ireland.

By the way, Irish Genetics are fairly complex, there are "Dark Irish" who have Spanish or Iberian roots.
