But I think your emphasis on socioeconomic class, and the angst of the middle class, is insufficient, because it doesn't address ethnonationalism, another pillar of fascism; and like the academic definition, isn't specific enough. The middle class periodically gets its knickers in a knot over various things, but my thesis asserts that fascism is specifically the middle class turning against a liberal democracy.
It's that element of reaction that I think is crucial, and unfortunately, an element in common with our present. Trumpists want to tear down liberal democracy and get behind the fuhrer principle. Their swamp is a pluralistic society which grants equality to nonwhites, and they've had enough of it.
