You're conflating masks with shutdowns
Espousing masks and social distancing is not shutting down the economy. If Trump was a normal human being he would have spent the last 5 months talking about the need for everyone to wear masks in order to AVOID shutdowns. It would have gotten him reelected.
But Trump is not normal. And neither are most of his cult followers. Most are angry, cranky old white dudes (who look like me) but have no functioning bullshit filter. I don't doubt we have MORE than another generation of Trumpian style madness in our politics.
