Not if you define "mentally ill" as someone outside the norm. About a third of the US population believes this, or things similar to it. It is a testament to the failure of our educational system and the congenital anti-intellectualism of American culture.
Listen, I've got nothing against J., and I even enjoy sparring with him, but we do him no favors by banning him, or ignoring him. The only way we can really help him is by showing him the very place he goes for validation and acceptance (a sign he actually respects our opinion) rejects his reasoning, not in details, but on fundamental principles. Eventually, like the political anomalists who preceded him, he will realize he cannot use logic or reason to justify his ideas. He will have to accept that either he is mistaken, or he is right and the rest of the world is entirely wrong about everything.
Perhaps he will now be able to realize that the mathematics he is using as a justification for his theories is not only failing to communicate his 'truth', but that it isn't even grammatically correct. It isn't communicating anything at all.
