"Thompson saw the appeal of that retaliatory ethic. He claimed that a small part of every human being longs to burn it all down, especially when faced with great and impersonal powers that seem hostile to your very existence.'

Maybe this also explains the apocalyptic, end-of-days ethos of religious fundamentalists, survivalists, preppers, civil war/boogaloo and other nihilist themes so closely associated with contemporary Conservatism. It may also explain the popularity of Trumpist values throughout the Western World. The world is in a state of fugue, changing socially and technologically faster than the collective culture can adapt to it.
