Then Trump came along promising to make bigotry fashionable again... and they ate that shit right up...
After they fled I caught some of them on white nationalist facebook groups that advocated for genocide... they always knew what they were, they knew they were lying to our faces, they were always bigots, they were just too cowardly to admit it unless they had a fellow bigot in charge.
Every single vote for Trump was from a bigot, in most cases it was THE motivating factor behind their vote.
