What drives these people is simple, black people want their rights and redress for the injustices committed against them. Many white people are starting to agree with them. And a black man was elected to the presidency twice, by a majority of all American voters (not just an Electoral College technicality).

Too many American voters feel their era of racial hegemony is coming to an end; and blacks, latinos, women and gays will get the representation that's due them at the polls. This terrifies them, and the commercial/ownership class is manipulating these people to get what THEY want; corporate dominance in the economy, low taxes, low wages and relief from regulations that protect workers, consumers and the environment.

The GOP sees the Democrats are the constituency that supports these goals, so they must be stopped at all costs, no matter what they support. No matter what the Democrats propose, the GOP MUST oppose it. It really is that simple. Republicans only have one agenda, they must attack whatever the Democrats favor, even if it is policies that were identified with Republican ideology until only recently.. They no longer oppose Democratic policies, they oppose the culture of inclusion and tolerance that is anathema to them. The GOP has become an alliance of convenience between the bigots, the Bubbas, the Biblebangers and the bosses.
