In fact, I think it should be increased to further discourage fossil fuel dependency, and to fight climate change. However, its easy for me to say that, I don't travel to work, I live within walking distance from a supermarket, and I don't need to go anywhere except to medical and dental appointments several times a month. If gas went to $20 a gallon I would not suffer at all.
When the pandemic relief checks went out mine went straight to my savings account. I didn't need the money, although I'm perfectly aware that other people did, and they weren't getting anywhere near enough.
The point is we all have different needs, and there are a variety of things the government can do to get resources to those with needs. Not everyone is going to get their fair share, and some folks are going to get more than they need. Most important, there will be those who suffer because they don't receive enough.
It simply is not possible to make sure resources are fairly distributed, and regardless of how careful we are, there will be mistakes, and fraud, and waste. Its like being in a war, not every bullet made in a factory eventually makes it into an enemy soldier's gut. Many never even get delivered to the battlefield. And after the war is over, there will be warehouses full of them that never got shipped out to where they were needed.
All we can hope for is that the people in charge are sincerely trying to do what is best for as many Americans as possible. And hopefully, that they have the skill and sense to carry out that mission as well as possible. We won't know whether Biden is doing a good job until later. And then, we won't have any way of knowing if anyone else could have done a better job if they had been in charge. All I know is I am happier Biden was elected than Trump. Although I will admit, I would have preferred Liz Warren or Bernie Sanders.
We live in a chaotic, random and indifferent universe. We have some control over our environment, and we can monitor some of what is happening around us, but like a sailor fighting a gale, regardless of our skill and experience, the sea always gets the last word. Oh, and one more thing: We are monkeys. We evolved to live in cooperative groups, working together towards a common goal. This allows us to accomplish things we could never do working on our own, but it also forces us to rely on how we organize ourselves.
